Understanding your skin type is the foundation of an effective skincare routine. Whether you have dry, oily, combination, or normal skin, knowing your skin type helps you choose the right products and treatments to keep your complexion healthy and glowing. Using the wrong skincare products can lead to breakouts, irritation, or excessive dryness, making it crucial to tailor your routine to your skins specific needs.
The Four Main Skin Types
1. Oily Skin
Oily skin produces excess sebum, which can lead to clogged pores and acne. If your face often looks shiny or you struggle with frequent breakouts, you likely have oily skin. Using lightweight, oil-free products and regular BHA based exfoliation can help control excess oil and keep your skin balanced.
2. Dry Skin
Dry skin lacks moisture and often feels tight, flaky, or rough. It may also be prone to irritation and premature aging. Hydrating cleansers, rich moisturizers, and ingredients like hyaluronic acid, vitamin e, and ceramides can help restore moisture and keep dry skin soft and supple.
3. Combination Skin
Combination skin is a mix of oily and dry areas, with the T-zone (forehead, nose, and chin) typically being oilier than the cheeks. This skin type benefits from a balanced approach, lightweight hydration for drier areas and oil-control solutions for the T-zone.
4. Normal Skin
Normal skin is well-balanced, meaning it’s neither too oily nor too dry. While this skin type requires less maintenance, using gentle cleansers, daily SPF, and hydration will help maintain its natural glow.

Why Knowing Your Skin Type Matters
1. Choosing the Right Skincare Products
Using the wrong products can do more harm than good. For example, a heavy moisturizer meant for dry skin can clog the pores of someone with oily skin, leading to breakouts. By knowing your skin type, you can select products that enhance your skin’s health rather than disrupt it.
2. Preventing Skin Concerns
If you experience persistent acne, irritation, or dullness, it might be due to products that don’t suit your skin type. Recognizing what your skin needs allows you to prevent common concerns before they worsen.
3. Maximizing the Benefits of Skincare Ingredients
Certain ingredients work best for specific skin types. Oily skin benefits from salicylic acid and niacinamide, while dry skin thrives on hyaluronic acid and squalane. When you know your skin type, you can choose the most effective ingredients for optimal results.
4. Saving Time and Money
Buying skincare products without knowing your skin type can lead to wasted money on items that don’t work or cause irritation. Understanding your skin allows you to invest in products that truly align with you.
How To Determine Your Skin Type
The only true way to determine your skin type is by looking at your pore size.
- Oily skin has unified larger pores throughout the face
- Dry skin has unified smaller pores throughout the face
- Combination skin has a mix of smaller pores on the sides of face and larger pores in the T-zone
- Normal skin has unified pores throughout with little to no variation in size
I recommend seeing a licensed professional to determine exact skin type as skin type and skin condition are easily mixed up.
An easy way to help you determine your skin type is by washing your face with a gentle cleanser and observing how it feels after 30 minutes:
- Oily skin looks shiny and feels greasy.
- Dry skin feels tight or rough.
- Combination skin is oily in some areas and dry in others.
- Normal skin feels balanced, with no excessive dryness or oiliness.
Or you can try what I like to call the Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner method; where you wash your face in the morning and wait until you get some oil on your skin. If it appears at breakfast, you have oily skin, if its at lunch, you have combination skin, and if its at or past dinner, you most likely have dry skin. Normal skin will feel nice and balanced for the whole day.
