Your skin is your bodies largest organ, it’s important to treat it right or we run the risk of impairing the skin barrier. We are going to cover how to properly care for your skin because your skin barrier is the outermost layer of skin that acts as a protective shield keeping harmful things out and good nutrients in. A broken skin barrier can result in hyperpigmentation, flakey and dry areas, acne, and even more skin conditions.
Know Your Skin Type
Knowing what your skin type is can save you a lot of time and money in the long run when wanting to properly care for your skin with home care products. An easy way to try to determine your skin type is by the BLD method; washing your face with a gentle cleanser in the morning and leaving it bare for the rest of the day to see what your skins natural oils start to come to the surface.
- if your skin is shiny by breakfast – you probably have oily skin
- if your skin is shiny by lunch – you probably have combination skin
- if your skin is shiny by dinner or not at all – you probably have dry skin
The official way to determine your skin type is to see a licensed professional. The size of your pores is a true determining factor of skin type.

Have A Basic Home Care Routine
Having a sold home care routine for your skin is essential and it doesn’t need to be over the top, the simpler the better in my opinion. In a home care routine you really only need three basic things:
- Cleanser – suited for your skin type
- Corrector – suited for your skin concerns
- Protector – nourish and heal
All of these products can come in many forms, it really depends on your lifestyle and how committed you are to skincare at home or in the treatment room. Correctors can be exfoliators, serums, moisturizers, etc. but should be gentle enough for often use. By implementing these three things you can maintain and begin to improve your skin health.
Know Your Skin Changes Seasonally
As we exit the cold, dry, and dark months of winter into the sunny, warm, and dewy months of summer the air around us provides (or strips) our skin of different things, so knowing how to properly care for your skin seasonally is important.
This summer we should swap our heavy day creams and oils for a light weight moisturizer with extra sun protection. By doing this we will avoid over clogging the pores with moisture loving bacteria to build up and a perfect place for acne to form.

See an Esthetician
Being curious about your skin is the first step in properly taking care of it, however, you can’t take the advice you get on the internet as law. Most of the people who post influential things on the internet are influencers and actors who are usually well versed in sales and marketing.
A licensed esthetician will see and touch your skin while getting to know your lifestyle to curate the best treatment plan for you, it depends on too many factors that are so specific to you individually. Seeing an esthetician can fit into your lifestyle, along with care for your skin at home.
Extra Ways to Protect Your Skin
Don’t you worry! Protecting your skin can happen with more ways than skincare, some other ways to protect your skin include but are not limited to:
- changing your pillowcase every week
- using a fresh face cloth and towel
- wearing layers and hats in the sun
